Camp Mode keeps your Tesla Model Y’s climate, lights, and power outlets running while you sleep, and it stops the car from shutting down or sounding alarms when you move around. Turn it on from the climate screen, park on level ground, and the cabin stays comfortable until morning. It works on the 2020-2024 cars and the 2025 Juniper refresh alike.
The feature does the hard part for you. The rest is just setting the car up so the night is actually comfortable.
How to turn on Camp Mode
Put the car in park, open the climate control screen by tapping the temperature, and select Camp. The fan icon turns into a tent. You can set your temperature as normal, and the car holds it through the night. Music and the screen keep working, and the 12V and USB stay live so you can charge phones or run a small light.
What it does to the battery
Running the air conditioning overnight usually costs only a small percentage of charge. Heating in cold weather costs more, often 10 to 15 percent or higher depending on how cold it is. Start the night above 20 percent, and in winter, camp somewhere you can charge the next day. This is the one number worth checking before you commit to sleeping in the car.
Making the night comfortable
Camp Mode handles temperature, but a folded-seat floor is not flat on its own. Level it with an inflatable car bed shaped for the Model Y, add a fitted sheet and a real pillow, and crack a window slightly to cut condensation. If you want shade or rain cover for the morning, a rear trunk awning gives you a covered space off the tailgate.
A few practical tips
- Park level so you are not sliding downhill all night
- Use window shades for privacy and to block early sun
- Keep a power bank as backup for devices
- Check the weather, since heating eats more range than cooling
Frequently asked questions
How long can Camp Mode run in a Tesla Model Y?
It depends on charge and weather. Cooling overnight uses a small percentage of the battery, so a full charge can last well over a night. Heating in cold weather drains faster, sometimes 10 to 15 percent or more per night, so plan your charging around it.
Does Camp Mode turn off automatically?
Camp Mode keeps running until you turn it off or the battery gets low, at which point the car warns you and eventually stops climate control to protect range. It does not shut off on its own during a normal night.
Is it safe to sleep in a Tesla with Camp Mode on?
Yes. Camp Mode is designed for exactly this and keeps fresh air circulating, unlike idling a gas engine. Park on level ground, keep some charge in reserve, and crack a window slightly to reduce condensation.
