Tesla Model Y Camping: Camp Mode Setup and Gear Guide

The Model Y makes a surprisingly good tent on wheels. The rear seats fold nearly flat, the battery can run the heater or AC all night, and you skip pitching a tent. This guide covers how to turn on Camp Mode, how to build a flat sleeping surface, and the gear that makes a night in the car comfortable.

How to turn on Camp Mode in a Model Y

Shift into Park, tap the fan icon on the touchscreen, and choose Camp (or open Climate and select Camp Mode). Camp Mode holds your set temperature overnight, keeps the cabin powered, and stops the car from cutting climate while you sleep. Set a comfortable temperature and keep a charge buffer of at least 20 percent.

Camp Mode usually draws about 1 to 3 percent battery per hour depending on the outside temperature, so a full night is well within range on a normal charge.

Making a flat bed in the back

Fold the rear seats down and you get a long, mostly flat load floor. The seat gap and slight incline are the only things to fix. A fitted inflatable camping mattress for the Model Y is shaped for that space and levels the seams so you are not sleeping on a ridge. Inflate it before dark and it doubles as seating while you cook or read.

Tips for a comfortable night

  • Level the car. Even a slight slope is noticeable lying down. Park on flat ground, or nose-up on an incline so your head sits higher.
  • Manage condensation. Two people breathing overnight fogs the glass. Crack a window slightly for airflow.
  • Keep a charge buffer. Plan your morning drive so you are not starting near empty.
  • Use the cabin power. The outlets and USB ports keep phones and lights topped up all night.

Frequently asked questions

Does Camp Mode drain the battery fast? No. It typically uses a few percent per hour, so a night of sleep still leaves plenty for the morning.

Can two adults sleep in a Model Y? Yes. With the rear seats folded and a fitted mattress, two adults up to around six feet fit comfortably.

Do I need a car-specific mattress? It helps more than in a tent, because it fills the seat gap and levels the floor. A generic air mattress often slides and sags into the footwells.

Set up Camp Mode, level the car, add a fitted mattress and some shade, and the Model Y becomes a warm, quiet place to sleep almost anywhere. Browse the Model Y camping and outdoor gear to build your kit.
